Seasonal Allergies

February 16, 2015

Austin is well known for several things;  live music, local shops, and allergies.  Allergies affect people from all walks of life and symptoms may vary from mild to severe.  So what am I supposed to do for my allergies?

Conservative and FREE measures include avoid being outdoors when the allergens are high.  Make sure you keep your house clean of dust and dander.  Regularly switch out the air vent filters in your house.

Over-the-counter remedies are a huge relief for the majority of allergy sufferers.  Antihistamines like Allegra, Zyrtec, Claritin and Benadryl are helpful for minor allergy symptoms.  Nasal steroid sprays like Nasacort are helpful for the maintenance of allergy symptoms as well.

Prescription medications include nasal steroids such as Nasonex, Flonase, and Dymista, which all can be expensive items.  Prescription Singular is also helpful for chronic allergies and asthma symptoms.

Systemic steroids or the “steroid shot” may provide temporary relief, but is not always the best long term option and has side effects and contraindications to use.

Be sure to discuss these topics with your provider the next time your allergies get the best of you.
