Safety Tips for Spring Break!

March 15, 2016

Spring break is a short academic break around Easter which is usually a time to enjoy the weather with friends and family or to take a vacation, typically one that involves sun and water.  Be sure to remember a few safety tips that you can implement to ensure a healthy and happy spring break.

Water:  The lake levels are up and so are our spirits.  The next time you head to the lake or any water destination, remember water safety.

  1. Never swim alone.  No matter your swimming level, it is never safe to swim alone in open waters, lakes or pools.

  2. Drinking alcohol and swimming don’t mix.  If you are going to be drinking alcholic beverages, be sure to do so in moderation and never swim when you are intoxicated.

  3. Always wear a life jacket while you are on motorized water crafts.  It doesn’t matter if you are an expert swimmer, you can never be too safe when it comes to boats and jet skis.

Sun:  Sunlight is important to your health.  Vitamin D is synthesized with UV light exposure, which is a necessary vitamin to help with normal bodily functions.  However, too much sun exposure can lead to sunburn and skin cancer.  When you are outside this season, wear at least SPF 15 and be sure to reapply frequently.  Water-resistant sunscreens still require reapplication every 2 hours.  Wearing clothing such as long sleeved shirts and hats can help protect your skin against the sun’s harmful rays.  If you happen to get a sunburn, apply aloe and stay hydrated.  Contact your doctor for severe burns and also if you notice any moles that have changed their size, color or shape.

Heat:  Winter is over and the heat is on!  Personally, I prefer the heat over cold but I also know what the heat can do to your health.  The elderly and very young cannot regulate their body temperatures as well as the rest of the population.  If you have a baby or older relative, be sure they limit their time spent in the heat.  Drink plenty of water throughout the day and take breaks in cooler areas in the shade or inside with A/C.

Last but not least... have fun, be safe and enjoy Spring Break!
