Pumpkin Carving Tips You Never Knew!

October 11, 2016

Pumpkin carving is a tradition which dates back hundreds of years ago that originated in Ireland when turnips and potatoes were actually used as Jack-o’-lanterns.  Early Irish Americans transitioned to using pumpkins which turned into the classic Halloween tradition we celebrate today.

While there are many obvious benefits to spending time with friends and family carving designs into your pumpkin of choice, there are amazing benefits the pumpkin has to offer in the seeds and flesh.

Pumpkin seeds are packed with protein, fiber and a healthy source of fat.  They also offer nutrients including copper, magnesium, manganese and zinc, which help in metabolic functions ranging from anti-inflammatory effects to heart health and immune system support.  Pumpkin seeds can be eaten raw, dehydrated or roasted depending on your preferred taste.

The flesh of the pumpkin is commonly used for those favorite Fall holiday treats including pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, soup and even pumpkin beer.  Pumpkins are low calorie and offer a great source of dietary fiber.  They are also loaded with Vitamins A, C, E, potassium and calcium.  Choosing a pumpkin that is organic is the ideal choice since it won’t come with the additional chemicals from pesticides using in traditional farming.

Creativity shouldn’t end with your pumpkin carving skills.  Get in the kitchen and create delicious healthy pumpkin delights with your family to enjoy this season!
